Drifting Thoughts
When my thoughts drift to that of a Great Blue Heron, its nobility and prowess as a stealth hunter comes to mind. I think about a familiar scene often encountered when out early with my camera, exploring wetlands for wildlife subjects. The recall goes something like this:
In the quiet dawn, as the sun’s golden rays illuminate the world, I find a place near the edge of the serene wetland. The water shimmers with a gentle ripple, reflecting the surrounding beauty of the landscape. The melody of the occasional distant songbird and the unmistakable call of the Red-winged blackbird, so common in the wetland, can be heard over the otherwise relative calmness of the morning. Across the way, a Great Blue Heron, poised and patient, stands within the marshy water. Its long, graceful neck reaches forward, taking slow, deliberate steps searching for an unsuspecting fish beneath the glassy surface.
I watch in awe as the Great Blue Heron’s focused gaze locks onto its prey. It strikes with a sudden lightning speed, plunging its beak into the water. It’s head fully submersed, a moment of suspense hangs in the air before it emerges, triumphant, with a shimmering fish clutched firmly in its beak.
Witnessing such a captivating display of nature’s artistry, I am reminded of the delicate balance within our natural world. The Great Blue Heron’s skillful hunting technique, honed through generations of instinct and adaptation, is a testament to the resilience and beauty of the creatures that inhabit our planet.
Always grateful
I am always grateful for the opportunity to witness such wonders. The haiku echoes in my mind, capturing the essence of my thoughts:
In tranquil waters,
Heron’s patient eyes descend,
Fish meets fate’s embrace.
