This is the fourth post in our “Greek Isles Cruise and Rome Adventure” series — a two-week journey through unforgettable ports, coastal cities, and historic streets. Before the bags arrived and the cruise officially began, we set off to explore the Odyssey of the Seas. This early walk-through offered a first look at the ship’s sleek design, high-tech features, and vibrant atmosphere, setting the stage for the voyage ahead. If you missed earlier posts, you can catch up by going to the first post here.
First Impressions: A Buzz of Excitement and Style

With a few hours to spare before our luggage was delivered to our stateroom, we took the chance to explore the ship and get our bearings. Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas is no small vessel—it’s a floating city packed with everything from fine dining to futuristic entertainment. If you’re curious about the specs, you can check out more on the official Royal Caribbean site.
As we stepped into the main promenade, the air buzzed with energy. Passengers, many of them fresh from check-in like us, strolled with curious eyes, scanning signs, snapping photos, and swapping first impressions. There was a low hum of voices, rolling suitcase wheels, and the occasional chime from an elevator or ping from a crew member’s handheld device.
The ship’s interior was striking from the start, with soft golden lighting reflecting off polished marble floors and a sweeping grand staircase that made for a dramatic welcome. There was a faint scent of freshness, perhaps a piped-in scent like many hotels use. There was something sweet, maybe from the nearby café? We passed by a variety of onboard shops, including jewelry, watches, souvenirs, and duty-free gifts. Window shopping would make a fun detour later in the cruise.
Dining Discoveries and Early Favorites
When it comes to food, the Odyssey of the Seas doesn’t disappoint. There are numerous specialty restaurants and complimentary dining options, including the well-known Windjammer Marketplace. Lucky for us, it was located just one floor above on Deck 14, convenient for early breakfasts and casual meals.
We came across Sorrento’s, a complimentary pizza place. Imagine walking into a pizza restaurant and eating as much pizza as you’d like. We were hungry and Sorrento’s had our name on it! Quick and easy, the pizza was tasty and hit the spot in a pinch. It is a very casual café with café-style seating. There was a sufficient assortment of pizzas, including pepperoni, vegetable, and margherita, among others. It isn’t self-serve, which is ok with me. It was just a matter of walking up to the counter and ordering which slice of pizza you’d like.
One of the highlights of our brief walk was stumbling upon the Bionic Bar, where robot bartenders whip up cocktails with precision and flair. I couldn’t resist ordering a Bahama Mama and watching the robotic arm shake, pour, and serve it with a mechanical flourish—it was half the fun. Surprisingly tasty, too.

Odyssey of the Seas Ship Tour: Entertainment, Sports & More
We also found the Main Dining Room, the not-yet but soon-to-be buzzing casino, and the stylish Music Hall, where live music and late-night dancing were just a few days away. Near the aft of the ship, we discovered the SeaPlex, an impressive multipurpose activity area featuring everything from basketball and pickleball to bumper cars—each available at different times throughout the day.
A second-floor sports bar, Playmakers, overlooks the SeaPlex, with plenty of TVs and seating, perfect for catching a game and grabbing a snack or meal.
There’s a lot more to discover, but this quick walk helped us feel more oriented and even more excited for what was to come.
With our casual stroll around Odyssey of the Seas complete, we were ready to unpack, unwind, and call it an early evening. In our next post, we’ll spend our first full day at sea—passing through the Strait of Messina and soaring high above the water on the North Star.
From quiet balconies to soaring views 300 feet above the sea, our first full day aboard Odyssey of the Seas was unforgettable.
